Attention Deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

ADHD, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults.

ADHD is characterized by symptoms that fall into two main categories:
Inattention: Difficulty sustaining attention, following through on tasks, and organizing activities. This can manifest as a tendency to be easily distracted, forgetfulness, or trouble focusing on details.
Hyperactivity and Impulsivity: Includes excessive fidgeting, restlessness, difficulty staying seated, and acting without thinking. People with ADHD might interrupt others, have trouble waiting their turn, or exhibit other impulsive behaviors.
An often overlooked element of ADHD is emotional dysregulation.
People with ADHD frequently experience heightened emotional reactions and have difficulty managing their emotions effectively. Here’s a closer look at how they intersect:
•  Intense Emotional Reactions: Individuals with ADHD might experience emotions more intensely than others. They may have rapid shifts in mood or struggle with feelings of frustration, anger, or sadness.

•  Impulsivity: Emotional impulsivity can lead to outbursts or hasty decisions based on emotions rather than thoughtful consideration. This can affect relationships and decision-making.

•  Difficulty with Emotional Control: Managing emotional responses, such as calming down after getting upset, can be challenging. This can result in problems with maintaining focus, staying organized, or following through on tasks.

•  Sensitivity to Stress: People with ADHD might be more sensitive to stress and become overwhelmed more easily, which can exacerbate emotional dysregulation.

Evidence Based Treatment
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can help individuals learn strategies to manage their emotions more effectively.

Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and deep breathing can help in regulating emotional responses and reducing stress.

Medication: Stimulant and non-stimulant medications prescribed for ADHD may also have a positive impact on emotional regulation by improving attention and reducing impulsivity.
